The Best Newport Rhode Island Wedding Venues | A Newport Wedding Photographer’s Guide

Newport Wedding Photographer | Genevieve Photography

If you’re planning a wedding in Newport, Rhode Island, you already know you’re in one of the most beautiful places on the East Coast. What you might not know yet is which venue is actually right for you. Newport has no shortage of stunning options, from Gilded Age mansions on Bellevue Avenue to waterfront tents on the harbor, and every single one of them photographs differently.

As a Boston and Newport wedding photographer who has worked across all of these venues, I put together this guide to help you understand what each one actually feels like, what it photographs like, and who it’s best for.

Belle Mer | Goat Island, Newport, RI

Belle Mer is the most modern of Newport’s premier wedding venues, and it’s stunning. Situated on seven acres of manicured lawn on the edge of Narragansett Bay, it offers panoramic views of the Newport Bridge, open water, and the kind of light that photographers dream about.

The venue has four distinct spaces: the Water Salon, the Island House, the Ocean Lawn, and the Loft. The Water Salon is the crown jewel, with 14-foot ceilings, crystal chandeliers, a wall of sliding glass doors that open directly to the lawn, and capacity for up to 280 guests for dinner and dancing. The Ocean Lawn can accommodate ceremonies for hundreds with the harbor stretching out behind you.

Belle Mer is owned by Longwood Venues and Destinations, which means the food, service, and coordination are all in house and consistently excellent.

Best for: Couples who want modern coastal luxury, large guest counts, and a venue that doesn’t need much decoration because the setting does the work.

Photography note: The water light at golden hour here is unreal. The Newport Bridge lit up at night behind marquee letters or a sparkler exit is one of my favorite things to photograph anywhere.

Regatta Place | Goat Island Marina, Newport, RI

Regatta Place is one of my personal favorites to photograph, and I’m not alone in that. Tucked into the heart of Goat Island Marina, this venue has a nautical intimacy that the larger Newport venues simply can’t replicate.

The signature cream and white striped sailcloth tent is adorned with chandeliers and billowing draperies, and the dockside patio offers some of the best waterfront views in the city. Guests can spill outside during cocktail hour, watch the boats come and go, and end the night under the stars with the harbor glittering behind them.

Regatta Place accommodates up to 180 guests and is managed by the Newport Experience, which also operates Newport Harbor Island Resort nearby.

Best for: Couples who want a nautical, intimate, and genuinely Newport feel. This isn’t a grand ballroom wedding. It’s a beautiful, warm, personal celebration on the water.

Photography note: The dock at night, marquee letters, fairy lights reflecting on the water. This venue ends weddings beautifully.

Newport Harbor Island Resort | Goat Island, Newport, RI

Newport Harbor Island Resort is primarily known as a hotel but it’s also an incredible backdrop for first looks, portraits, and ceremonies. The private lighthouse on the property is iconic, and the views of the harbor and Newport Bridge are hard to beat anywhere in the city.

As a venue for getting-ready coverage and first look portraits, it’s one of the most photographed spots in Newport. Many couples staying here use the lighthouse grounds for their first look before heading to their ceremony venue.

Best for: Couples getting married nearby who want a stunning first look location, or those who want all of their wedding day details in one walkable area on Goat Island.

Photography note: The lighthouse at golden hour, the harbor behind a couple during their first look, the suspension bridge in the background. Every frame here tells you exactly where you are.

Newport Beach House | Middletown, RI

Technically located in Middletown, Newport Beach House sits directly on First Beach and it’s the only private luxury wedding venue in the Newport area where guests can literally be on the sand. Also owned by Longwood Venues, the space is modern, airy, and designed to blur the line between indoors and out.

Multiple event spaces including the Surfside, the Eventide, and the Oyster Lounge can accommodate anywhere from an intimate gathering to over 1,000 guests flowing across the beach, terraces, and lawn. The southwest-facing beach means stunning sunset light for ceremonies.

Best for: Couples who want a true beach wedding without sacrificing luxury. This venue has a relaxed, barefoot-in-the-sand energy that Belle Mer doesn’t, while still delivering the full Longwood service experience.

Photography note: Nothing beats ceremony portraits with actual Atlantic Ocean surf behind the couple. The light on the beach in late afternoon is magic.

Ochre Court at Salve Regina University | Newport, RI

If you want to feel like you stepped into a French castle perched above the Cliff Walk, Ochre Court is your venue. Built in 1892 by the Goelet family and designed by architect Richard Morris Hunt (who also designed Marble House and the Breakers), Ochre Court is the second largest building in Newport and it serves as Salve Regina University’s main administration building.

The Great Hall rises three stories with intricately carved wooden arches and a domed ceiling mural. The mansion sits right on the Cliff Walk with sweeping ocean views from the terraces. As of 2025, Ochre Court is now open to all couples, not just Salve Regina affiliates, though spots are very limited since the university hosts only a select number of weddings annually.

Best for: Couples who want Gilded Age grandeur in a French chateau setting, up to 200 guests, and a venue that’s genuinely unlike anything else in Newport.

Photography note: The Great Hall is one of the most dramatic interior spaces in all of New England. Portraits on the Cliff Walk terraces with the ocean behind you are breathtaking.

Rosecliff Mansion | Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI

Rosecliff is the only Newport Preservation Society mansion available for wedding receptions, and if you’ve seen it you understand why it books so far in advance. Modeled after the Grand Trianon at Versailles and completed in 1902 for Nevada silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs, it’s one of the most photographed wedding venues in New England.

The heart-shaped marble staircase, the largest ballroom in Newport, hand-painted ceiling murals, and an oceanfront back lawn make Rosecliff feel like a film set. It’s literally been one, appearing in The Great Gatsby, True Lies, and 27 Dresses. The mansion hosts only one event per evening, so exclusive use is guaranteed.

Capacity is up to 160 guests for dinner and dancing in the ballroom, with the adjacent Salon adding room for another 60.

Best for: Couples who want pure Gilded Age grandeur, architecture that doesn’t need decoration, and portraits that look like editorial spreads.

Photography note: The heart-shaped staircase alone is worth the venue. Portraits on the oceanfront lawn at golden hour, the ballroom lit for a reception, the marble entryway. Rosecliff is a dream to photograph.

Marble House | Bellevue Avenue, Newport, RI

Marble House isn’t available for full wedding receptions, but it’s one of the most extraordinary venues in Newport for rehearsal dinners and welcome parties. Built in 1892 for William K. Vanderbilt, it was the most lavish home in America when it opened.

The canopied terrace overlooks the Atlantic Ocean and the colorful Chinese Tea House, creating a backdrop that’s genuinely hard to describe to someone who hasn’t seen it. Rental of Marble House is an exclusive experience with only one event per evening and access to the mansion and grounds for photography.

Best for: Couples who want a rehearsal dinner or welcome party setting that’ll absolutely blow their guests away and set the tone for the whole wedding weekend.

Photography note: The terrace, the Chinese Tea House, the Cliff Walk just beyond. The Vanderbilt-era details inside are stunning for detail and portrait work.
